Tonal Manipulation Technique

My tonal manipulation technique begins with a camera, then the colors are transformed with software. Toning often closely resembles monochrome techniques and are inspired by classic chemical processes applied of black and white photographs, such as selenium, sepia, and platinum. Other techniques are reminiscent of early non-color images such as cyanotype, calotype or daguerreotype. A selection of two or more colors are mapped across the darks and lights of the image. I typically spend many hours further adjusting the intensity in select areas in a process that succeeds hand-painting. I reduce the color in an image to draw the viewer through the shapes and lines of the composition. I choose multichromatic or muted tones when color would be a distraction from the composition and compel an emotional reaction.
