An anonymous skinny dipper submerged in warm turquoise water. At ease in her surroundings, a quiet tension is symbolized by her buoyant posture. Her skin is a glowing pink, immersed except for her fingers. Her hands, positioned at a right angle, momentarily hold her hair. A toned back, small waist, and feminine hips are visible as the figure recedes into the water. Vaguely sensual, but seemingly innocent, the details of her pose are obscured by bubbles and ripples. Through the layers of color, reflection, and refractions, lies a mystery; the solution to which becomes whatever the viewer wants to imagine.
The title is inspired by Henry James, “Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”
I love working with water and other liquids. The ungovernable nature of liquid provides a balance between order and chaos; I can predict the general nature of the image, but the exact details are left to chance. A constantly moving mirror and lens, the liquid provides intricate visual surprises.
