Two figures stand nude in the water of a calm river in this fine art nudes photograph. One poses mid-stretch. The other assumes a neutral posture, presumable between movements. The relationships (visual and otherwise) between these two are the concept for this composition.
The design is divided by the horizon, slightly above the centerline. The major elements are simple: an unpunctuated sky, the texture of water, and two nude women.
The palette mostly runs through a range of blues. Golden yellows in the women’s hair and bodies contrast with the cool blue-grays of the sky and water. The colors of the skin and hair are the brightest in the otherwise muted palette. Dark ripples on the river are the only movement. These dark gray shapes repeat to form a pattern throughout the lower portion of the design.
The third color in the design is the green of a thin strip vegetation. This straight line connects the two figures and defines two rectangles of sky and water at the top and bottom of the composition. The image is bisected horizontally, with a nearly straight tree line. This distant line gives a strong sense of stability to the overall composition. Although the horizon line occupies a small portion of the image, it is a powerful visual element.
The two nude women in the water are the central subjects of this fine art nudes piece. The bold vertical of the front-facing figure at right, paired with her symmetrical pose, is consistent with the static feeling. The figure in profile at left, although slightly smaller, stands out as vibrant. Her dynamism is a prominent focal point in the midst of the stayed surroundings, despite her relative distance. These two characters contrast in terms of pose, disposition, silhouette, orientation.
Comparing the two nude women, there is a balance between sensuality and direct nudity. The figure on the left adopts a sensual pose that accentuates the curves of her unclothed body. However, she is turned away, converting this sensuality into an aesthetic statement. The pose of the rightmost figure is more forthright: she faces us; nothing is apologetic about her nakedness. Yet, she displays no desire to entice the viewer beyond a frank presentation of her natural beauty.
